In the hills of Olá District in Coclé Province, Panama, the landscape itself tells a heroic natural story. Near the rural communities around El Picacho, Coclé, the sharp volcanic peaks known as the Picachos de Olá rise above forests and rivers. These mountains formed from ancient volcanic lava domes roughly 1.9–1.7 million years ago during the geological formation of the Isthmus of Panama.

Over time, erosion carved valleys, rivers, and waterfalls across the region. One of the most powerful natural landmarks is Los Chorros de Olá, a waterfall system considered the second-highest in Panama. Its waters descend from the northern mountain range into clear pools surrounded by tropical forest.

The natural landscape became a silent hero for the region. The rivers provided water, the fertile valleys supported agriculture, and the mountains protected wildlife and ecosystems. These lands also formed part of the environment where ancient cultures of Coclé developed goldworking, ceramics, and stone artifacts, demonstrating a long human history connected to the natural resources of the area.

Today the rugged terrain, waterfalls, and volcanic peaks of Olá remain a symbol of endurance. Formed by geological forces and shaped by water over millions of years, the mountains and rivers around El Picacho stand as enduring natural guardians of Coclé’s landscape and history.
